Get outside at Sunnylands Center & Gardens

Located in Rancho Mirage, Sunnylands was designed by architect A. Quincy Jones for Walter and Leonore Annenberg as a winter retreat and became known as the “Camp David of the West.” Completed in 1966, the 25,000-square-foot midcentury modern estate with an iconic bubblegum pink-hued roof has welcomed a host of presidents and dignitaries including Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and President Barack Obama.

 Today, the estate which was declared an historic site in 1990 and gardens are open to the public. At the Center, watch a 20-minute film on the Annenbergs and the site’s history, peruse a collection of art, crystal, and sculpture, or meander in the pristine gardens with 1.25 miles of walking paths and 50 species of plants. (Book in advance for estate tour, $45 per person; Center & Gardens open Thursday through Sunday, 8:30am-4pm; Admission is free of charge.)
